I was sulking through last weekend, watching how Germany crushed Argentina and the Netherland defeated Brazil on the field. I was a big fan of Argentina and rooted them to go all the way into final and take up Brazil (my other favourite team). No one, or should i say, none of the Brazil and Argentina fans would have thought they could get kicked out at the quarter final match.
Many doubted Maradona as a couch..yes, he might be a great player, but being a great couch requires a whole different set of skill. However for those that followed their game from group stages to top 16, he did a good job as his men romped top top 16 and beating Mexico at 3-1.
What went wrong? I suppose Maradona's all-out attacking style were widely exposed to the world and of course to the scarily smart Germany couch who studied and identified the gap between argentina's attack and defence. It is undeniable that the Germany couch is a master mind and great tactician, but I do not see his passion for football as much as I find it in Maradona. Maradona, on the other hand, may be a poor tactician, over exposing his style, but nobody could deny his enormous passion for football; how he weaved up and down from the sideline in every match and his genuine sense of love for his men whom he hugged and kissed each and everyone of them even though they lost the game to Germany.
Football is not all about tactic, it also need a dash of humanity and characters.
